Introduction to Scratch Basics

You will be creating a fiction story in Scratch  using the information you learned about your local animal. Follow the links in order completing each step before moving onto the next.
To begin your project login to Scratch following this link. 

Lesson 1: Choosing a Sprite and a Background
​Scratch Basics 3.0

Assignment 1: After watching the 3 min.video once, you will be creating a practice Scratch project. Use the login button above to login to your Scratch account.You will be trying out some of the features introduced in the video. As you go through these directions, pause the video as needed. 
  • First name your Scratch project "Practice Scratch".  Do not use your name in the title!!
  • Second, you will be choosing a sprite from the sprite library.

  • Third, choose a background for the sprite. Once you have a background, practice having him move to different X and y coordinates.
  • Fourth, get your sprite to say "Hello World" when you press the Green Flag.

​Lesson 2: Choosing a Sprite from the Sprite Library and a Change of Costume to Create Animation

Assignment 2: This is a four minute introduction on how to change a costume of a Sprite and create animation. Watch the video once and then you will try to change your sprites costume.
  • First, choose the cat sprite and change its costume so the cat will move.  
  • Second, choose another sprite and try to change its costume.​
  • Third, choose the ball sprite and change its color.

   Lesson 3: Moving Your Sprite on Your Background

In this video you will learn to move your sprite around. You will be creating a background grid and learn how to move your sprite on the grid (about 12 minutes).

Assignment 3:
  • Watch the video once and then login to your Scratch account.
  • You will make a second Scratch project that you will code so they move across a background.
Lesson 4: Scratch Tutorial 
Creating a Story Using Dialog
This lesson shows how to move a sprite across a background and broadcast a message. Creating an animated story using dialog (about 6 minutes).  Students should include the following.​
  • Choose 2 sprites and each sprite with a costume change
  • Choose 1 backdrops
  • Demonstrate a start block (flag) and program runs from start to end.
  • Create code for dialog
Use a planning worksheet for this project. Your teacher will show you how to use this sheet.
Short video clip from  NASA Opal project which give a Hello, World via a laser. Hello, World is a statement used in every beginning computer project (about 2 min).
